There is something to be said about Thanksgiving. I know, I know, not
the most prominent of American holidays, but one where people join
together and eat a whole lot of food, watch football and just plain
enjoy life. Now I really can't say how these people act when they aren't
gathered around a table or lounging in the living room. I'm not
privileged to join the land of the living for more then 3 days a year.
The other 2 being Christmas and Easter, but Thanksgiving is my favorite.
It's the most honest holiday; it's based on the one thing that Americans
enjoy more then anything else: food.
With that food comes wine, which is where I fit into the scheme of
things. Being a wineglass, you get to hear more then a lot of other
flatware or dishes. Things that come out of the minds and mouths of
drunks are usually interesting. This Thanksgiving was no different.
Perhaps it wasn’t even the alcohol though; perhaps it was the
atmosphere. I belong to Mrs. Scully, and I'll have you know that she is
an insane person when it comes to organization. Be this as it may, I was
long ago assigned as the wine glass that Dana Scully uses every year
when she attends dinner. I have to say that this made me the envy of the
rest of the glasses; they were all over it after a few years.
Well, until this year rolled around, and I was privy to one of the most
Interesting conversations of my life. Scully, as he calls her, invited
one Fox Mulder over for dinner and football. This move caused quite an
uproar from her brother Bill Jr., actually he was furious, which in all
honesty is nothing new for him. I swear he must have gone on for an hour
arguing with Scully about how Mulder shouldn't be there, it was a family
holiday. This irritated her beyond belief, and really, making her angry
isn't on my list of dos before I break.
Scully was ready to leave with Mulder until her mother stepped in and
reamed Bill for even suggesting that Mulder wasn't family, then she told
everyone to go sit down at the table because it was time to eat. I'm
not sure how Mulder felt about the whole thing, he looked pretty
uncomfortable at dinner, and her did offer to leave when the argument
broke, although Scully wouldn't allow it. Mulder is one hard guy to
read; he was pretty non-conversational throughout dinner and he had this
blank expression on his face, unless he was looking at Scully, then he
would get this great look on his face, his eyes would light up and he
would get this small smile. She'd look back at him and return whatever
secret message he was sending her way. It was one of the most adorable
things I've seen in a long time. I don't know if I'd say that it was
love...well ok I would say it was love, but love in the purest form.
Dinner went by without much action, but after dinner when everyone
congregated in the living room, toting their wineglasses of course, now
that's when the fun started. Mulder and Scully sat next to each other on
the love seat--see I told you it was love. Bill took the chair farthest
from Mulder and Scully. Tara sat on the couch as close to Bill as she
could get. She was holding Matthew. Charlie sat on the other end of the
couch and Mrs. Scully sat between Tara and Charlie.
The football game was already in full swing so as soon as the TV was on,
everyone was cheering or booing, or whatever. Everyone except for
Mulder and Scully, they were in their own small world. He was slouched a
bit so their faces were more level, and they were so close to each
other, if either moved any closer they would be in each other's laps.
Mulder was the one to speak first. Leaning in close to her ear he asked,
"Scully, what are you thankful for?"
She turned and gave him this look of surprise, which quickly turned into
a thoughtful expression. She tried to respond with humor first. "Well
I'm glad I didn't have to kick my brothers ass in front of everyone. How
would that look a 5'3" woman taking down a 6'2" man, and I use the term
man loosely here."
Mulder chuckled a bit, but he was looking for a serious conversation.
"No really Scully, I want to know." After that the mood changed, not in
a bad way, but suddenly it seemed that the next few sentences were going
to change someone's life.
"Well Mulder," she started out, "there is a lot I'm thankful for. Being
alive after that stupid rookie shot me."
"I'm thankful for that too." He interrupted she gave him a smile and
continued.
"I'm thankful that we have the X-Files back and that we got out of that
field in North Carolina. Although while we were there I was thankful
that I wasn't alone, even when I thought you were dead, I knew your soul
would never leave mine. I was glad that you were there with me."
Mulder's eyes were kind of misty at this point in the conversation. He
was smiling brightly at Scully. "I'm glad that you know I could never
leave you, even after I leave this world and I’m suspended in purgatory."
This elicited a small giggle from Scully, who responded, "You promise to
haunt me while you're there?" Now Mulder was the one chuckling. Scully
continued. "I'm thankful for times like this where we can let down our
hair, so to speak, and just be us."
His chuckling died down and he held her eyes with his telling her that
he loved this too. "Scully, times like this is what make life worth
living. Times like this, and McDonalds french fries."
Scully smiled at the comment, but she knew that turnabout was fair
play. "Mulder, what are you thankful for?" she asked quietly, suddenly
recalling that there were other people in the room.
"I'm thankful that you care for me, enough to invite me to dinner at
your mother's, even though you knew that your brother was gonna fight my
presence. I'm thankful for little gray men, because they're the reason
that we met," Mulder said.
She grinned at this and replied, "Oh I don't know, Mulder I'd like to
think it was fate, something more powerful then an extraterrestrial."
Mulder brushed his lips across hers then, just a light, quick kiss, one
which was unexpected and welcomed all the same. "Together we are more
powerful then anything that comes our way," he said, his lips still
close to hers. "And I'm thankful that we have each other."
This time Scully moved her head so their lips collided for a longer
kiss. Mulder pulled away remembering that they weren't alone.
Unfortunately, he was too late. When they looked over at everyone else,
they met the curious eyes of four people. Three of whom were happy, and
one which was furious. Mulder and Scully just smiled, got up, and left.
I assume that they were on their way to finish the unfinished business
that couldn't be done in public.
At least not legally.
